B.C.-born distiller Charisse Woods, logistics and inventory manager for Kentucky Artisan Distillery, defined different types of casks in common use at distilleries and their key parts and materials. She identified the requirements for quality barrel storage, and detailed the pros and cons of various warehouse styles and locations. Best practices for receiving, using and storing new and used barrels were discussed, as well as simple barrel maintenance.
Woods covered the basics of a barrel’s expected life cycle (including pros and cons of re-charring), as well as systems for barrel identification and organization, tracking and moving.
